Oui to Soupe Joumou from Haiti! Haiti is one of my fellow Caribbean islands and Joumou represents so many wonderful sentiments - Joumou (pronounced "joo-moo") is the soup of Independence, the soup of remembrance, and the soup that celebrates the new year (It was on January first, 1804, that Haiti became the world's first independent black republic by defeating the French). Joumou is a pumpkin beef soup made with love by every household in Haiti, to be served to the family and every guest who comes to visit. I typically prepare this unique soup around the New Year.
in-house beef stock, beef, pikliz (Haitian spicy pickling vinegar), calabaza pumpkin, carrots, leeks, turnips, cabbage, lime & scotch bonnets for flavoring.
